Mentorship
Individualized Artist MentorshipPortuguese, English, and French
Online and hybrid models
One of my favourite things to do in this world is being able to give artists a little help in their creative journeys. For that, I strive to do everything I can to join them in their own universes, and try my best to see the world through their own perspectives. The anthropologist Tim Ingold (2013) puts this gesture beautifully when he speaks about the necessity to “bring the movements of our own being into close and affective correspondence” with what we encounter. Complementarily, the philosopher Brian Massumi (2010), who has translated the work of Gilles Deleuze into English, speaks about an important difference between criticism and critique pointed out by the latter. He says that real critique does not exist if the people who take part in an event do not enter it accepting the fact that their opinion might fundamentally change after that gathering. Coming from a Communications background, this is how I carry my work with artists: respectfully, mindfully, and always aiming to create bridges rather then seeing their practices from a supposed place of distance and judgement.
Following this premise, I offer individualized mentorship for artists and creative practitioners at different stages of their trajectories — whether you are beginning to shape a professional path or simply looking to deepen your relationship to your own creativity. Drawing on my experience as a Doctor in Communication with a focus on Curatorial Studies, an international curator, educator, and mentor with more than 10 years of experience across different countries, these sessions are designed as a supportive and rigorous space for reflection, experimentation, and growth. Together, we can think through your research, clarify your artistic voice, strengthen how you articulate your work, and build confidence in how you position yourself within (or alongside) the art world.
❋ Developing a critical practice
Critical analysis and constructive feedback of your current inspirations and research. Creation and review of your oral and written artistic discourse, including the artist statement, biography, projects descriptions, and any other text that translates your voice.
❋ Studio visit training
“What in fact is a studio visit? Does it need to take place in a studio? What if I don’t have a studio?” These are all common questions emerging artists often don’t have a clear answer to. What makes a great studio visit? How to behave, what questions to ask, how to keep this important encounter engaging, interesting, and relevant to both your and the curator you’re meeting with?
❋ Portfolio review sessions
We’ll start by a critical reading of your portfolio and then go through how to best present your projects and achievements, step by step.
❋ Other specific orientations
In case your necessities are not directly addressed in these offers, send me an email and we can discuss! For example, I can help you with oral presentations, grant and residency application reviews, strategic planning for designing an international career, and much more.
